MY WELCOME HOME TO EARTHQUAKE COUNTRY

On our 7-hour drive home late Easter Sunday from the capitol which is in mid-California, I was pondering what my next post would be about. We unloaded our luggage and brought  it inside the condo. Everything seemed calm and peaceful.
When I put on the computer at 11:00 pm, the news from the Associate Press today gave me the Welcome  Home to the Los Angeles area as well as this short update.
(map is from article of Associated Press)

VERY interestingly, we left Sacramento at the same time a 7.2 earthquake hit in Mexicali, just over the border in Mexico, but it was reported by seismologists that most of Southern California felt this quake, and the buildings downtown Los Angeles were swaying! Wow, we escaped this scare.
Even though I am not afraid of earthquakes, it takes sometimes days to get back to daily life (also having to do with how severe the after-shocks are). And that is when there is no damage to one's house, or worse, bodily injury to people one knows. The earthquake was felt as well in Arizona. The experts say that there is no tsunami expected.
As Associated Press reports, the result of this quake killed two people in Mexicali, caused black outs, and nursing homes and hospitals were evacuated. The first impressions are that about 100 people were injured. Let's hope that this is ALL the news!

Other than that we had a very pleasant time with our kids and grand kids  past weekend. Every one was jazzed that it was dry during the egg hunt! But  we had 7 hours of rain on our drive back home to Los Angeles -enough raindrops for a while, I would say:).

Thanks for this report, Jeannette. Thank God your are OK.
I think you have to be brave to live in California. My son and his family live in LA, and I worry about the big one.

What's with all your rain lately?
Be well. Be safe.

I trust you had a lovely Easter. I heard about the quake on the radio this morning. There is way too much of these around in the present, I am wishing for a more quiet time in the world soon.

Glad you made it home safely and had a nice Easter weekend. Stay safe!

I guess I should turn on the news. I haven't seen, heard or read the news since Friday.

I'm glad you enjoyed your weekend and egg hunt. If you're tired of the rain, you can send it here. Michigan is way too dry.

I am lucky to live in a country that is located in what might be called a low risk area.

By the way, be safe.

When I heard about the earthquake yesterday, I said a quick prayer for everyone affected. I'm glad you're okay.

Nature's Anger always frightens me. I'm afraid of storms, floods, earthquaques, volcano eruptions etc... May God have mercy on us mortals wherever we are!

Dry weather for the egg hunt is such a bonus. Happily, we had a dry window, too.

I'm glad that there were no ill effects from the shaking. Those of us who live on these uneasy west coast fault lines always have the possibility in the back of our minds.

Dina,
Thank you for wishing my safety and I thank Him too! For me it's easier to deal in my mind with natural disasters than with angry Arab nations around me, like you!

Try not to worry too much about your son -everywhere in the world a catastrophe could happen.
I welcome the rain -than we'll be out of the drought we were in for so long!

Zuzanna,
Yes these times are chaotic, and I think it will be for "a while" before that is over!

Twain12,
Thank you Twain! It happened more than once while I/we were traveling that we escaped some natural disaster like an earthquake, avalanche, flood...

Reader Wil,
I don't believe that that earthquake was a sign that the end had come, like some -but earthquakes, rumors of wars, etc. does fit in the whole pattern, doesn't it? Thank you for wishing my safety:)

Jane (Midwest),
Thank you friend! I'm glad I have peace of mind about this, and am not anxious about earthquakes like some:)

Rudee,
Can't remember how many years(!) ago it was that we had so much rain. Hopefully that will mean that there will be less fires this year.
Last night I was at your blog, and I saw that you're settled now in your new house! Isn't that a good feeling?

Rainfield,
Glad I see you back at my blog -missed you! Thank you for wishing my safety. Where you live may be low-risk for earthquakes, but it may be high risk for something else?

Clytie,
It is the people in Mexico right over our Californian borders who are effected much more, also because their buildings are older and may not be as sturdy...Thank you for saying that prayer!

Duta,
In Holland we each year have really heavy windstorms -that actually frightens me much more than earthquakes. or volcano eruptions - I don't think I would ever want to live close to a volcano.
I do believe that our lives is in God's hands,so whatever He decides is probably the best, even though it may be a hardship.

Stephanie,
I've seen more than one program about the fault lines, but somehow it doesn't scare me. Yes, it was nice for the kids to not have their candy-eggs mingled with water:)

Glad you're fine, what a surprise to hear you had rain for hours on the drive home, we think of Ireland as wet and California as sunny always!
I replied to your post comment on my knitting over at my blogpost - in case you don't get notifications.

Catherine,
Thanks for letting me know -I don't know why I get notifications of some and others not...maybe I have a moody computer...:)
I know, it has been so long ago that we had anough rain that this hopefully will get us out of the drought (several years Calif. bought water from other states!)

Jeannette: Glad you got through the scare with no harm. That happening can really bring you back to reality.
BTW: We did have pizza in Venice.

I have never experienced an earthquake, so that would be awfully frightening.

Glad you had a nice time with your family. Family time is always the best time.

Jeannette StG said...

Tom,
Thank you for your concern:)
How long were you in Venice?
We were regretfully only one day there, because we came by Hoovercraft from Yugoslavia (called back then), where we were camping.
Back then I didn't paint or took pics...I guess that's life:)

Jen,
To me a hurricane or flood is much more frightening -not even speaking a tsunami -worst of all!
It's always a toss-up -I love my kids, but do NOT want to live where they're living!

I can not say I like any of this world's extremes, I do not do so well with them, bless you that you missed it.

Joey,
Yes, I'm thankful I escaped this one! But I can't complain, the good Lord protected us from an avalanche and flood while traveling:)

Marinela,
Thank you, Friend! Do you have Spring break right now, or are you home schooled?

I am afraid of earthquakes. I experienced two while I was a child, and I'm scared to death of them. Glad that you are okay. Have a blessed weekend.

Jeannette StG said...

Angie,
Sorry Angie! A childhood fear like this one is hard to get over, since you can't "practice" getting over it (since you never know when they come).
