A LITTLE SUNSHINE

Heard that in several parts of the country it's raining, raining, raining. In the city it can be miserable when it rains days on end. There is nowhere to go, but under a roof. Many living spaces are cramped. Lucky are you who live on the country side. At least you have space, and green to look at, in between the rain drops.

This is to give you a little sunshine. Once the sun will come back out again. And the rain will be forgotten, unless you'll live in the Northern regions of the globe. Then you look for a table in the shade, or for an umbrella to get away from the sun to eat lunch at a restaurant.

Or you will choose a shady place and sit in your lazy wicker chair to read a book. This tiny patio is on Balboa island, close to Laguna Beach, California. Click on the image to see the wonderful statue of the little girl. And the frog on a bench on the left.

Or, listen to an open air concert under a big umbrella/parasol.
I wish I had taken a pic of it in Shen-shen, which is on the mainland China's side of Hong Kong. The sun was shining so mercilessly that we bought a parasol, which made a difference of at least 20 degrees. Hubby gladly adopted the new custom, when he saw men unashamedly walking under a parasol.

And at the end of the day you gaze at a liquid fire sunset in the sky.

When it's raining we tend to miss these special things about the sunshine. I wonder if there are things you miss about the rain when the sun is beating down on you and the city is rationing water, you can't go anywhere without a bottle of water to drink, etc.

I love all the seasons and all the weather. Would hate to live in some place that had too much of one or the other; so boring.

Beautiful thoughts and beautiful photos.

What a way to block the view of the concert stage with those absurdly bright, fun umbrellas!!

We have had forecasts of rain for days now, but not a drop has fallen. So far, that is just fine. What I miss when it doesn't rain is that lush smell of greenery and earthiness.

There are definitely thing I miss when there is no rain....the fresh smell of the earth....drops of water shimmering on the plants....the way the sky seems bluer without all the dust in the air.....walking in the puddles.....the way everything seems brighter....to watch the water come down and know the plants and grass is going to grow for the wild animals to eat...to see the lightning in the sky....to mention just a few.

I LOVE THE RAIN!!!

Oh my goodness, I miss the rain like you won't believe! Most parts of South Africa have summer rainfall and it's fantastic to have a thunder shower in the late afternoon after a scortchingly hot day. It refreshes and revives your soul and make everything look clean and shiny and the smell is wonderful.... I love to eat ice-cream while wearing my shorts and a tea-shirt and walking around in the rain... big sploshy drops... that's living!

Is that Balboa Park in the 3rd photo down?

Where I live, we need the water badly. So rain is a Blessing. The more rain, the better.

Me, I like a quiet rain with intervals, not a non- stop kind of rain, which reaches our soul and bones and leaves them wet and crying for the sunshine to come and dry them .

Reader Wil,
Thank you Wil - your blog is always very interesting to read! We are spoilt here in California, because we have a sunset most days of the year. When the sun is not out for four days in a row, people start complaining!

Jane,
In the higher elevations seasons are more apparent than in the vallies of California, where I live. The one I miss most is the Fall, because it so prepares one for winter (since I grew up in Holland).

VioletSky,
I chuckled about your comment. The absurd is so common here in California that I forget it's not normal!!
Wow, even in mid-California is has been raining for days last week (don't know how it is now). I seldomly can smell the earth and greenery, because it's more hot that not, and I live in Los Angeles.

Joan,
I quess you LIKE rain, LOL. Do not live in California -and plenty of my friends have moved back after their studies to their mildly weather state, because they couldn't stand the heat-on-end!
Does it rain a lot in South Africa?

Jeannette StG said...

Robyn,
I'm confused - you live in Egypt, right? But are you from South Africa originally?
To have a thunder shower after a scorching hot day would be very welcome to me! But here it just cools off. I can't complain though, it's a dry heat here in California, and I have a difficult time coping with heat in combination with high humidity.

Matthew,
You might know all these places, LOL The first one is Old Town Sacramento, the second is Balboa Island, and the third one is Balboa Park, San Diego. Thanks for visiting!

Duta,
You are saying it so poetically about liking the rain in intervals. I agree, rain is a blessing, because it makes our crops grow, and gives us water to drink!
Not to forget, it makes our hill sides green instead of brown (we have brown hill sides most of the year), so I go crazy taking pics the short time they are green!

What a thoughtful and timely post! It has been raining so much lately. Everything is very green. I whined about it when my daughter's friend offered "I like to stand by the open door because the rain smells so good."
What a revelation! The rain makes everything smell fresh and sweet. Okay. I'll stop whining now.

Neetzy,
You are funny! No wonder kids like to be around you. I can't even remember when the soil really smelled like rain here in the mostly hot and dry desert climate of California. - I guess to much concrete around, or it's not raining long enough?
