FALL ALONG THE ROAD

This weekend  we drove along the road for about 7 hours to spend time with our daughters and their families. Hubby did the driving, because like a true workaholic he hates having nothing to do. I mostly read art magazines till we are OUT of Los Angeles, so I don't have to see how he zigzags in and out lanes in traffic jams:).
(By the way, I had scheduled to post this on Friday 1 pm, but 'It" didn't happen! Sorry!)

When the landscape turns to hills, I take out my camera. Even though we have driven this route tons of times, I still find something I haven't photographed yet (from a moving car).
The pastel I painted below was taken along this road.

For a few hours on another day these clouds kept passing my window (at home) at record speed.  I combined the landscape with the sky. There was no way to paint the sky  plein air. Driven by a strong wind these clouds changed shape every few seconds.

The sky reinforces the urge Fall has for me:
hurry, hurry, get everything in tip top shape before the blanket of winter comes upon us.
(sorry, this pic was littered with many telephone wires. I was not able to remove all them completely without changing the shape of the clouds).

19 1/2 x 11 1/2 Pastel, St. Germain

Do you feel the last sun rays
of the year, flashes and lighten
bright colored leaves falling?

Do you hear the wind
blowing on bare branches?

You see the palette scrapings
of brownish and reddish tones?

Fall dominating the landscape and
wind gusts quickly building a canopy
of billowing clouds above it all.

Beautiful fall scenes and clouds. At least you don't have to worry about much of a "blanket of winter" in LA.

LOVE the painting Jeannette. Definitely eye-catching with the contrast in colors.

Fantastic landscape Jeannette! Love the way you combined the two to get the perfect painting.

The skies in the first two pictures remind me of a descriptive sentence I read the other day in another blog. The author mentions the 'pewter' of the clouds that turned after a few seconds into 'platinum'. I liked the attaching of metalic color to clouds.

Your painting displays vividly the sense of hurry in the air felt in autumn.

Beautiful post, Jeannette.

I'm always amazed how well your paintings capture the feelings in the photographs. Well done.

Yes I feel the wind and chill of fall as winter approaches.

Love the pastel. Hope you had a good visit with your daughter.

I hit the road today so will probably be offline for a few days.

Have a great week.

Marvin,
It may get to the 40ties in Dec-Feb at night, and seldom gets lower than that - in L.A. that is. That's why we like to go to the mountains in the winter to see the snow!

Woman in the midst,
I left a comment on your blog. Do I understand that correctly, do you have 3 kids? You must have lots of energy to do a blog, next to that! Happy you like my pics:)

Joan,
Thank you, Joan. Wow, your "following" keeps growing!

Jane,
Yes, it has become a habit to combine things (I don't know if that is to my advantage or not!)

Duta,
Thank you, Duta:)
Your comment is challenging me to try a pewter or platinum sky (skies is a fairly new thing for me to paint -before I just painted them blue)!

Monika,
Thank you!
By the way, my oldest daughter told me that she has the whole series of H.Potter's books LOL Needless to say, she has a different taste in books than I have:)

Rudee,
That's a very nice complement my friend!
After perusing your spinning blog a bit more, I'm druweling (spelling?) over you spinner -or however you call the contraption. it's one of those things always wanted to try out,but I'm living in the wrong area to find someone to show me. Did you take classes or did you do it on your own?

Had a great visit with both daughters, and we went to Apple Valley and had organic apple juice and apple pie in the evening from there - scrumptuous!
Hope your trip is good!

Beth,
Thank you Beth, and also again for going beyond the normal happenings of our own world on your blog - I know you will be blessed for your encouragement to others!

I keep coming back to look at the sky in your painting. I hope you realise you keep re-inforcing my inferiority complex! I love painting pastels and flatter myself that the landscape part would not be beyond my reach (eventually) but I could never hope to come near that sky. It is marvellously done.

I like the way you "recreated" the clouds, much more interesting.
I hope fall comes here so I can do some real pictures instead of the ones in my head.

Scriptor,
Can't remember seeing a pastel at your blog...did you post them? Thank you, Scriptor, you are good in making compliments:)

I see it as the result of unendless practicing!
A hint for skies: Make the top edge of the paper of a darker value and lighten it towards the horizon, to give it a sense of depth.

Joey,
Thank you - yes, that sounds like me, reforming, recreating LOL

To do things in your head with a Fall atmosphere would be hard! I've taken these pics last year, but wasn't done yet with the painting till it was spring before I was satisfied with the result.

That really is a stunning work Jeannette, your contrast of colours and the beauty of the sky are remarkable.

Love the painting and the painting with words as well.
I am so far behind with getting things in shape for the onset of winter.

I have a new haiku blog you might like here:

I forget, do you follow my poetry blog at all? I know I see you at Blasts From the Past.

Barry,
I receive that compliment, especially since your wife is a painter too:)
Is is still raining over there, where you live?

Jeannette StG said...

Poetikat,
Thank you, Kat!
Sometimes I follow your poetry - when I do, I want to take time to understand and enjoy it! (even if my response is "that was a great poem" - I want to mean it, and not just say something that sounds good:) - and several blogs I read have a few blogpages )
- but I'll check out your new blogpage!
