I have made some adjustments to the original instructions, to make the hat a little roomier, since I don't like my hair as flat as a pancake when I pull off the hat!
Needles: circular needle size 9 (5.5 mm)
4 double point needles (dpn)
Gauge: 16 sts and 25 rnds = 4 inches in Stockinette stitch (St. st)
Some hints for first time knitters of hats:
Most hats are between 21 and 22 inch in circumference to fit one's hear comfortably. Add or subtract number of stitches to cast on for individual fitting.
Go over to dpn whenever number of stitches becomes too small for the circular needle.
Stitch Guide

Rnds 1 and 2: Knit with tanRnds 3 and 4: Knit with variegated
Rnds 5 and 6: Knit with variegated, even (no increase)
Rnds 6 and 7: Knit with midnight or navy blue
Rnds 8 and 9 Knit with midnight or navy blue, even
Rnds 10 and 11: Knit with variegated
Rnds 12 and 13: Knit with wine red
Rnds 14 and 15: Knit with variegated
Rnds 16 and 17: Knit with dark brown
Rnds 18 and 19: Knit with variegated
Rnds 20 and 21: Knit with dark brown
Repeat Rnds if necessary for color pattern
HAT
With dark brown and circular needle, cast on 76 sts. Place marker and join. Be careful not to twist sts.
Purl first 2 rounds.
Then, knit every round until piece measures 5 inches from beginning.
Purl 1 round for ridge.
(As you see on the sample, I knitted half of the 5 inches with tan, instead of 5 inches with dark brown - do what you like!)
Follow color pattern (see Stitch guide) for 4 inches or more.
Shape top: change to dpn and continue:
Rnd 1: *K10, k2 tog; rep from * to last 4 stitches, k4 - 70 sts.
Rnd 2 and all even numbered rnds (unless otherwise indicated): Knit
Rnd 3: *K8, k2 tog; rep from * - 63 sts rem.
Rnd 5 and 6: * K - 65 sts
Rnd 7: *K8, k2 tog; rep from * - 56 sts rem.
Rnd.8-10: * K -56 st.
Rnd 11: * K5 tog;. rep from * - 48 sts rem.
Rnd 13: * K4, k2tog; rep from * - 40 sts rem.
Rnd 15:* K3, k2 tog. rep from * - 32 sts rem.
Rnd 17: * k2, K2 tog; rep from * - 24 sts rem.
Rnd 19: * K1, k2 tog; rep from * - 16 sts rem
Rnd 21: * K2 tog, rep from * - 8 sts. rem
Break yarn, leaving a 6 inch tail (15 cm), pull tail through remaining sts, pull tight and fasten off. Alternative method: single crochet all sts to cast off with a crochet needle.
Weave in all ends on inside of hat.

I like the colours you have chosen for your hat - like you I can't bear it if hats are too tight and flatten my hair. I've never used a circular needle before but I'm very tempted to give it a try - thanks for sharing the instructions:)

It won't take long to get used to a circular needle!
Of course you can use the double point needles instead.
From the beginning and throughout I keep checking how it fits on my head. Especially the roomy-ness and the length (from beginning to end).
When I knit for the poor I make sure I have a few sizes that will fit different heads.
