RELAXED WEEKEND - ramble

What a relaxed weekend. I needed that. Puttering around. No deadlines, schedules, or commitments.  I called my favorite nursery on a whim yesterday, to ask if they already had the Christmas cactus in stock.

And they did. Pink, white, and red.
So, I chose a big white one, and a small red one.
I put them close together.

I have a weakness for African violets, so this one begged me to come home with me.
Another orphan rescued:) Now I see this pic, I notice hubby has been doctoring with the settings. So, I don't feel bad taking it into Photoshop to get the effect I originally wanted.

Some people feel alive in the morning. Others in the afternoon. For me, I feel most alive in the evening. My inspiration for painting also comes in the evening. Never in the morning, unless I am waking up from a dream about it.

This weekend we went out for coffee. Exploring our new neighborhood and night life, so to speak. This was a cozy, but well lit coffee shop. I like to see what I'm drinking. Nice interior, comfy chairs and not too small. We were astonished when at 9 pm they said they were closing. Is this Los Angeles?? Maybe we're in the wrong city! I had counted on 10:30 at least.

We met up with friends whom we had not seen in ages, and caught up on each others stories of the years we had not seen each other. Seems like all of California is on a roller coaster (a tad exaggerated). But when you hear that some of your friends are in an equal position, things do not seem so bad anymore. We all will survive this. And some of you out there, you will too, even though you have the feeling that you're hanging on by a thread.

But I have a different finding. I feel I am a little bit "shorter" at the end of the day since I always need to adjust my rear mirror.

I know what you mean! That is way too early for a coffee shop to close in Los Angeles. My friend who lives there, but originates from Boston says that Los Angeles might be a large city, yet lacks the sophistication of a cosmopolitan one. If one wants that in California she suggests going to SAn Francisco. I love African violets as well. They have such happy faces.

Love the flowering Christmas cactus, and the violet too although I've never had any luck growing them. Nice little coffee shop in your new neighborhood. I'm sure they're feeling the crunch too.
I love puttery days with no commitments, just not every day.
Have a great week Jeannette.

Sounds like a good weekend.
I have a white Christmas cactus coming into bloom right now (one I've had for a few years).
I also have African violets!
Unfortunately I also have a computer hard drive crash (writing this on the laptop) = not relaxing!

Ah, I love Christmas cactus.;) I have a purple one and it blooms so beautifully already; in fact I have plans on featuring it on my blog this Wednesday.
There is nothing like an evening spend with good friends.;)

Hello Jeannette, I am glad you had a relaxed weekend, full of new and colourful flowers. The coffee shop looks delightful and perhaps closing early is its charm? :)

Yes, I´m hanging on by a thread and money borrowed from my sister. It´s a tough world out there. Living is expensive, it´s better not to eat. Next, they´ll be taxing the air we breathe.

Kat Mortensen said...

Hi Jeanette! The Christmas cactus look lovely. Have you painted them in the past?
I write best in the afternoon. I get ideas in the early morning, but my thoughts are cohesive by the afternoon. Evenings are for non-thoughts.

I tried to join the friend connect app you sent, but it would not allow me to do it. Sorry. Are you on Windows Live by chance, or Facebook?

There is nothing like meeting old friends and catching up, is there.

Rainfield,
That's a humoristic way of
saying it, LOL!
So, how "short" are you?

Jeannette StG said...

Angie,
Wonder if part of why Los Angeles lacks sophistication in this sense is because it was not developed by (former) Europians?
Right now the earlier closing time definitely has to do with the recession. Of course there parts of the L.A. basin where they are open till late.

Jeannette StG said...

Gaelyn,
Oh I agree, puttering every day would become boring! The African violet is tricky sometimes - some have stayed alive for years, but lately they are more finicky. Maybe it depends on the grower.
But the cactus is hardy!!
You have a great week too, Gaelyn!

Jeannette StG said...

Dawn,
Yes, somewhere I read that your computer crashed...panic, that's what it would be for me - hope it's fixable?
Most people in California don't grow plants indoors, but since I'm originally from Holland where winters are long, I've kept up my love for seeing glowers and plants in my living room.
Hope this week goes smoother for you!

Dawn Treader,
I forgot naming you by Monika, so this is to make sure you'll see the reply above is to you!

Jeannette StG said...

Zuzuanna,
You know who will be visitng your Wed. post? LOL! I love them because they are so easy to take care of, and flower every year!
I agree, with this moving business this year, I really missed having time for friends - I'll be making up for that next year:)

Jeannette StG said...

Shaista,
I'm seeing you have energy to make comments to your readers (and they have increased too!)- that makes me really happy. Does that mean that you are feeling (somewhat) better?

Thank you, Shaista those are two things that make my day (and evening)!

I am an early bird and fade a bit in the late afternoon, but my time comes in the evening, when I am wide awake and creative.

I felt the urge to get some Christmas flowers this afternoon, your cacti and violets are just the thing I'd love to have too, they are gorgeous!

Jeannette StG said...

Irene,
You make me laugh - it's good you can see the funny and sunny side of things no matter what! Well, they tax the road, the ground, so I can foresee when they're desperate for money, that air will be taxed too!
Maybe we can eat less, but not eating does not sound good to me LOL

Jeannette StG said...

Poetikat,
Guess that I need a long time to warm up and get my engine going! Most therapists in private practices work in the evening- that's probably why:)

I didn't send you a friend connect thing (as far as I can remember) - when did that come?
Because a few weeks ago my blog and email (Windows Live) got scammed by Jhoosh (and later I heard from a Blogspot friend that this scammer also had been on Facebook).
So don't write me on Windows Live! and I'm not on Facebook (yet -I'm still resisting the idea, although I had several invites).

Jeannette StG said...

Poetikat,
Thank you though for wanting to join me!!

Jeannette StG said...

Weaver,
Yes, I love that part of life!

Jeannette StG said...

Merisi,
Lucky you - am surrounded by early birds, wanting to meet me 6 am for breakfast! They do understand though when I tell them I've been painting after midnight:)

Am curious which Christmas flowers you are going to get..but you're probably going to post them?

I also feel more alive in the evening.
I have a friend with whom I sometimes meet at a coffee shop, and she always wants it to be in the afternoon. And then she wants a table outside, which is fine with me, but she 's never satisfied with the amount of shade so we change tables until she finds the right angle; in the process something on the table gets broken and it embarasses me ,but she's a childhood friend so I have to live with this.

This Is My Blog - fishing guy said...

Jeannette: What neat photos of the flowers.
BTW: I just like to have fun with Joan and I have one of these mysteries tomorrow.

Jeannette StG said...

Duta,
Sorry, but I had to chuckle -about your friend, that is. I have a newer friend with a similar habit - it's is in church - she moves from the outside of the row of chairs, to more inside, and then finally sit in the middle of the row, leaving her husband somewhere, still one one of the outer chairs -poor guy.

Sometimes I have the impulse to say very loudly "Could you make up your mind, in ONE time, Pleaaase."
Duta, because she's your childhood friend doesn't mean that you have to live with it - say something! -anything LOL.

Jeannette StG said...

Fishing guy,
Thanks!
I know you're just teasing her (it's Dutch humor - you do like you're serious, but you're not).

Is this an invitation to your mystery? You know, I'm horrible at these things LOL

Christmas catci are one of my favorite houseplants. I have a white one that is just starting to bloom.

Meeting with friends at the coffee house sounds so nice. I am a night person too. I usually do my best thinking at night - whatever that is.

Ya, I light up a bit more a night for some reason. That is a lively coffee shop and those seasonal flowers are pretty..there is just something about this time of year as far as whats blooming. One of my favorite colors is that A.V. though.
Well I'm glad your relaxing.
Have a great week Jeannette.

Jeannette StG said...

jen,
Yes, I agree, they're so easy. and not very susceptible to bugs. The white one is so beautiful!

Yes, same here; don't ask me to do anything at 7 am - I'm still a zombie then LOL

LA is more about nightclubs and bars. If you want coffee shops in California, San Francisco or Berkeley is your place.

Marvin said...

Relaxing weekends are good for recharging one's batteries. The Thanksgiving cactus we've had for years is budding and will bloom soon. Yours is very attractive.

Jeannette StG said...

Regina,
Several on this post have admitted they're more alive at night:) When the weather is colder outside, it's nice to have flowers inside. And with flowers there never can be too many colors (for me).
Thank you Regina, you have a great week too!

Jeannette StG said...

Dutchbaby,
Sorry, I should be more clear...with Los Angeles I mean the whole L.A. basin, so that means Pasadena, Santa Barbara, etc. included.
I quess you don't know about the rivalry with San Francisco - I've lived here more than 20 years, and I'm here to stay. The last places I would want to go to is to live in San Francisco or Berkely!!:)

Jeannette StG said...

Marvin,
The cactus I posted, I just bought - hope it still looks attractive next year around this time:)
The last cactus I had I neglected for too long, so it's kind of decimated... (and I have no green thumb!). What color is yours, Marvin?

Marvin said...

I would say our cactus is bright pink, but your color vocabulary is probably more extensive than mine. See for yourself and decide.

Jeannette StG said...

Marvin,
thanks for the link! And I enjoyed the info about Thanksgiving - and Christmas cactus -the one I neglected, it actually is a thanksgiving cactus, looking at the edges, but it started blooming AFTER Christmas! So, I don't know what to make of that... (don't necessarily need an answer, may be I just forgot to give it water, LOL!)

Most people would call that pink, Marvin. But I would call it at a light fuchsia color (a mix between Alizarin Crimson and blue ultramarine -see, you didn't want to know this:) )

Diane AZ said...

Your new white and red Christmas cacti are beautiful. I have a little pink one the usually doesn't bloom until January.

I'm a morning person, rising well before sunrise. Most of my days are without commitments yet I'm never bored.

I like your image of the cozy coffee shop. I'm surprised they close so early. In Tucson, many places stay open late, but I rarely venture out after dark.

Jeannette StG said...

Diane,
If you read my last comment to Marvin, I had one cactus that did that too.
Good that you're never bored! Maybe when people have a particular interest like nature, or something that always is changing (like painting), seldom are because they go with the flow of things.
When you're a morning person you do get to see a lot of sunsets!

Thanks for your good question just now. At first Jews did not want to live in Tiberias because Herod Antipas had built it over Jewish graves. Later the rabbis solved the problem and Jews came to live there and they thrived.
The late Prof. Izhar Hirshfeld, who excavated so much of Tiberias, when he first saw parts of the theater (not amphitheater) poking out 19 years ago, said:
"The most interesting thing about the theatre is its Jewish context. Unlike Tzipori [Sepphoris], which was a multi-cultural city, Tiberias was a Jewish city under Roman rule. The findings demonstrate the city's pluralistic nature and cultural openness, a fact uncommon in those days."

Jeannette StG said...

Dina,
Thank you so much for taking the time to answer this question - very interesting!. In my opinion Jews thrive anywhre they live:)

Jeannette StG said...

Gary,
good observation and memory as well! Guess that flowers are such an important part of my life that I forgot that I just a few posts ago I showed the Nov. roses LOL

I guess i am late in catching up. I used to be that night person, but that is a thing of the past and now the morning suits me best with my eyes rarely able to stay up past 11 PM.
My own Christmas cactus are beginning to have buds - Christmas cactus flowers by thanksgiving!

Jeannette StG said...

Joey,
It's okay! About catching up, as well as having become a morning person. We've got to do what we've got to do!!
Wow, so many people have the Christmas cactus - if you look at Marvin's comment above and click on "see fo yourself" he gives a blurb on Thanksgiving and Christmas cacti!

Rosie said...

The African Violet is so pretty I love them but they are so hard to keep going - I'm a morning person - I like to get up and get things done early because I flake out about 4pm. - someone once told me that you are at your lowest ebb at the time you were born and I was born about 4p.m. in the afternoon so it holds true for me. I love to read your 'puttering around' posts:)

Jeannette StG said...

Rosie,
Can't remember how it was in Holland to keep the African violet -they're doing pretty good here, as long as one mists them regularly (because California is so dry).
I have never heard of that, about the lowest ebb -interesting.
Glad you like my puttering:)
