STILL LIFES OF WINTER

Please scroll down to the bottom of this post for Watery Wednesday, Midweek Blues and Weekend Reflections -thanks!

For months now I have been admiring snow pics of  you who live in more Northern regions. Today it is my turn, because we went for a day to Big Bear Lake and we took a stroll at 9000 feet. It was a "warm day"  and snow was melting.
Love to take snow pics, but glad I don't have to deal with frozen water pipes when living in snow ( I still remember what drama that can cause!),  but how interesting a pine cone becomes when it's highlighted by  the snow!

And yes, I remember how inconvenient it is that even when you have hauled supplies up the mountain for a month, and you forgot something. You first need to dig yourself out of the snow before you can drive away with your car! Even worse, when you come to town you discover that the stores are closed!

But how a humdrum path transforms into a romantic walk when nature goes into hibernation and  water, wind, and the sound of feet walking become the only sound heard

Life slows down...cleaning ones boots  take precedence over hurrying to another place!
What I really like is kids and adults playing everywhere in the snow.

Some of you who have been reading my blog for a while know I'm particularly fond of  hats, but here it's an absolute necessity! This one I knitted before I got married, so it's several decades old and it went with me around the globe. Hubby caught me here goofing off!

And a forgotten chair catches one's attention.  It probably stands on someone's property, but the snow has a way of blurring commonly recognized boundaries.

  Big Bear Lake, CA

But the lake at Big Bear takes the prize in beauty in winter time.

I know how lovely it is to see snow when you are not used to get it in your backyard. Last week we had unusual snow and we delighted in it. Your header picture of the berries is so sharp and clear I feel like I could touch them.

A walk in the snow - especially in the country - can be a wonderful thing.
Last night it was so cold the snow was squeaking with every footstep. I was sure I was waking people up as I walked!

Those pictures show beautiful scene, but have frightened me away because of the temperature.

Ms J, thanks for sharing BB's snow pics. I hope all the snow would not melt, cause we are going this weekend with my photography group....to take snow shots!

I don't know quite why, but I find the chair both incongruous and charming at the same time. Nice photos, but next time, could you add a photo of the beach? I've forgotten what one looks like.

Lovely, relaxing photos. I love the one of the pine cone:)

All too familiar ;) except for adults playing in the snow - one does not see a lot of that, living in town. Kids yes, but adults no. I guess if they want to play, they take their car and go out of town first, leaving their usual adult responsibilites behind...

Fun pictures! I love the one with the chair.
Have a fabulous day!

I'd love to wander in the woods rather than tramp the city streets with the dog.
I'm impressed by your splendid hat!
Greetings from slushy New York.

The white snow highlight on that pine cone surely adds a nice visual touch. How cold was it?

Dank u / thanxx for your comment, Jeanette, under one of my recent posts. The scenes I took on the island of Sylt (North Frisia), Germany's northernmost island.

Regards, Uwe.

Kerri,
Thank you, Friend! It's the simple things that are most beautiful in nature:)

Karena,
Thank you for the invite! As a painter I would like to see how she makes the brass bracelets -my natural curiosity...:)

What is it about snow that brings out the child in us - the sense of adventure? Looks like fun!

Jeannette StG said...

Vagabonde,
Yes, I read your great blogpost about the snow! Hubby is getting better and better in close ups (I snatched this one from him:) )

Violetsky,
Oh, was it YOU who who woke me up that night?

Rainfield,
I don't mind the cold for a day if I have extra warm clothes with me:)

Ebie,
Got to look at your Big Bear snow pics soon!

Rudee,
As soon as I saw the chair I knew oit would be a good one for my blog:)
I've a whole collection of beach pics, I could fake it and send you one, but to tell you the truth I haven't been there since mid-Nov, lol!

Rosie,
I can take those relaxing photos, because I don't have to live in the snow:):) Hope weather is not to cold in the UK!

Monika,
You are right, it's a little different here, many adults here are much more for "playing" (whatever the play is) than in Eur.

Debbie,

Elizabeth,
Thanks about the hat:) Glad we don't have the process of the snow melting in the city -that's the worst!
And thank you for the "follow":)

Eki,
Thank you! That day it was in the (valley) city in the 70ties, at Big Bear during the day around 54 but after 4 pm quickly dropping to 47 (Fahrenheit).

You-Wee-Because,
Hubby was born and raised in the province Friesland (NE) in Holland, ad he lived 3 years in Berlin (I joined him the last year), but we've never been on the island Sylt - as I can see from your blog, we missed something! Thank you for your visit:)

Betsy,
Yes, it's rather strange, isn't it, that a blanket of frozen water can make such a difference:) But I'm glad we can enjoy it!

Winter is beautiful in her white glory, but cold and long. Nice picture you show up.

Hobbyentusiast,
Yes, for you it is! In California we are happy for every rain and snow drop, since we desperately need the water here! Thank you for the visit, but I'm curious how did you find my blog?

The chair is delightful! And, I totally agree that the 'quiet' of snow is a wonderful gift. Even in the city, I know when the snow has fallen - there's a hush in the morning. Beautiful photos, Jeannette

Snow does have a way of softening all things and making them beautiful.

PS. My PC is back and working! :)

All of these shots are lovely...but I especially love the one of you in your hat. I ALWAYS wear hats. I knit them, I sew them, I buy them, and i ALWAYS wear them. It is wonderful to kind another hat person.I also am continually taking photos of my rocker out in the show in the yard. The photo of the lake is beautiful, the macro of the pine come is great, and the roadway looks like some of our here in Virginia from time to time. Thanks for a lovely post.

I LOVE the pinecone shot! The chair is out of place but makes a poignant shot.
Lovely self portrait!

beautiful scenery and what a great hat!

Luna,
Thank you! What song are you referring to?

EGWow,
Glad this one came out all right -it's one of my happy accident experiments with macro:)
(still don't have the hang of it)

Dianne,
Thanks! I knew when I saw that chair it would be one of those conversation pieces:)

Carol,
My skills with taking snow pics are very limited,so it actually doesn't do justice to how beautiful it is there:)

Kim,
Thank you! With a desert climate I'm very fortunate to be away only 2 hours from the mountains!

Stephanie,
Thank you, friend! You're right! I even noticed when it was cold and rainy in the city it was so quiet on the street side of our condo!

Rebecca,
So true about the snow! Yay, I'm glad for you!!

Genie,
Nice to meet another hat person! I even went on your space at ravelry - I see you do a lot of knitting! I love the gumdrop hat with the ruffle-rim -so cute!
I like to, but then I don't have enough time for painting (see my 2nd blog page Art Notes)

Wow where is the route there? Lots of snow!
I loved these pictures, I think yes...the snow can bring some problems, mainly if you need to drive, but it's beautiful!

Thanks for your visit and comment on my blog :-) I found your blog because your were linked up to Guest Heart Thursday last week. I was also linked up on my other blog A picture in time :-)

Cildemer,
Thank you, friend! Really enjoyed your post about that building in Nancy!

Jessica,
Colorado is one of the states that reminds me so much of Switserland! Your blog is to enjoy posting stuff you're interested in, not to get as many followers as possible:):)

Leia,
I know -sometimes hard to tell where the road is or someone's yard:) Have a great weekend!
Don't actually know if you are used to snow in Brazil? Or only in the mountains there?

Carolina M,
thank you! the pine cone is my first good shot in macro:) Hope someone will sit on that chair when summer comes!

Nuts,
Wow you're a good observer! I had not even seen that "diamond". Thanks for visiting my blog:)

Inger,
Thanks for the explanation of how you found me! Enjoyed perusing your blog:) Have a great weekend!

Halcyon,
Thank you! And thanks for visiting:) Unfortunately the white balance is off in the pic (touched that button by accident), so I had to adjust it in photoshop:)

Dianne,
Thank you! When I was visiting your blog today, I had to smile. It's clear you are totally smitten by Tyler:):)

Serendipity,
Thanks so much for visiting my blog! Glad that reflection came out okay:)

'Tsuki,
Thanks, friend! Fortunately for me, I don't have to live in the ice and snow, lol!

hi jeannette, that's quite a cute hat you got there. i'm fond of knitted ones too, but sadly, i couldn't use them here,we live in a tropical country and second, i don't know how to knit either. ^0^

the best about winter is collecting dried acorns,we keep them as souvenirs.
we actually did that last year, when we were in Japan. ^-^

gr8 post, glad you posted it.

nog gefeliciteerd met jullie huwelijksdag 39 jaar, dat hoor je nog maar zelden ;-)

Jeannette StG said...

Arabesque,
sorry for not answering right away. You probably could wear anything knitted in a lace pattern, but that's a little harder! No shops there who provide teaching in knitting?
Yeah, I love to collect pinecones:) Have a great weekend!

Maaike,
De 39 years tells about what age I could be, but I'm surprised that you don't hear that often anymore in Nederland?
