THE SHAKES

Meant to post this last week, but with the interruption of Blospot, I postponed this. Since I'm not a newspaper, I figure no harm done, lol.
On May 11, 2011 there were two earthquakes in SE of Spain. The reports vary about the magnitude, somewhere between 4.1 and 6.3 . Since I live in earthquake country - California, I first didn't pay much attention to the magnitude, since we had worse earthquakes here.

Both photos are from Globotisum under the CC license

But apparently they did here more damage . Reports I read were that nine people died, as result of the second quake. They say its the highest death toll in Spain caused by earth quakes in that area (SE of Spain) in more than 50 years.

Thousands needed to be evacuated. What really caught my attention is that the area affected, Lorca, in the region of Murcia, is only 85 miles from where we once had our honeymoon in Malaga, the birthplace of Picasso.  Even though that was a long time ago, that makes one think since I once was there!

...and about the earthquake.. It´s really heavy what´s going on only in the last year in this case. It´s terrible for the people who lost all, many even their lives.

I heard about the quake in Spain ... I was only in Spain once, and I don't even remember where exactly it was. It breaks my heart to see the damage, and to know how many people are killed, hurt, or have lost so much. The TV showed centuries-old buildings crumbling into the streets. So sad.

Interesting! We toured Madrid and other areas of Spain, like AlHambra while we lived in Morocco. I loved it.

When we arrived in the Madrid are and there were superhighways after living in Morocco I thought I had arrived in US!!!

With all the natural disasters lately, it really gives you pause for thought about how fragile and precious life is especially when they hit close to home or places with fond memories attached. We are still be recovering from the tornadoes and will be long after the news has gone on to other things. My county Spalding, Georgia, was heavily covered (Fox news)the first day and have not been back on but on seeing the devastation in person everyday and knowing those effected makes all the difference in the world.
Keep your beautiful memories and cherish them.

Leckeres fur Mensch, two times!
Thank you -have to say though that these are not my own pics, but from yahoo-news. My hubby is a cabinet maker (trained in the Netherlands).
Yes, horrible and sad news.

Clytie,
Wonder if the damage was more extensive, because the buildings were so old (building codes not as strict).Quakes, tornadoes, hurricanes and floods are all so devastating:(

Nitwit,
Oh yes, we visited the Alhambra too! It was beautiful! Wanted to go to Morrocco, but we couldn't afford it. But never have been in Madrid.

Johnina,
Hope your house and life were not effected? You are right, it's only "news" for a week, but the rebuilding can take years!
Yes, thank you, that is good advice.

Interesting to hear you had your honeymoon in Malaga. My husband's place is about 50 miles north east of Lorca. His daughter is out there now so wonder if they have seen any other damage.

I wonder if the damage is due to different building codes? Sad.

Jane,
Your hubby has a vacation house, or a house for the winter htere? I remember that it was popular for Dutch retirees to do that in the 80ties.

Rebecca,
That was my guess, Rebecca. Also, of course because Spain as country is many centuries older than the US.
