WATER SIDES IN HOLLAND

For Mellow Yellow Monday  For Ruby TuesdayvFor Midweek Blues  For Watery Wednesday
Claimed out of the Sea -  for Alphabe For Sky Watch  For Weekend Reflection
For Scenic Sunday

I always wondered what it would be like to live on a boat. Had the impression that many more take that option in Europe than in the United States. But I may be wrong!

Many farms are on the water side

After a few days thinking about it, I renamed this post into "Water sides" (formerly "I always wondered"), because there's much variety in the water sides of this little country that was more than half claimed out of the North Sea (and land is below sea level. That's why we have dykes to protect us from drowning).

Sluice gates in Amsterdam

At many places  sluice gates or flood gates are used to level out the water when boats and ships pass (hope that I'm explaining this correctly, but I hope you know what I mean:) )

I don't know the answer to that one, but I do know that I love this photo! The reflections are an added bonus!

I have long dreamed of living on a houseboat. Not sure why, since I am not fond of being on water, but then there are few waves on a canal. But I do love small spaces, so maybe it is the coziness and the windows all around that i like.

I always think it would be kind of fun to live on a boat, too...as long as the water was always as smooth as pictured. Being a seasick sort of person, I expect it would take a long, long time before I took the seabands off.

Somehow boat living looks so peaceful. I wonder why that is?

I've always wanted to live on a houseboat. I love the water.

I love this photo.

I've had to take to posting less frequently because of chronic conditions with which I deal daily and still get my daily duties done.

Your blog is beautiful, but you must take care of your first priorities, whatever they are.

Patrick,
Thank you! The sun was setting when I took this pic...

Sanna,
Hope your dreams come true some day!Can imagine that the smallness seems cozy.

Carol,
Thank you! I'll get up to par somehow!

Stephanie,
Agree that if you're quickly seasick, it may only be for a vacation:)

Rudee,
it must be the calming move of the waves we're attracted to:)

I'm especially attracted to those houseboats painted with generous helpings of red!

DITTY IN RED

Just a pinch of scarlet
To liven up the place;
Just a hint of ruby
Brushed upon your face;
Just a bit of cherry
Dancing round your toes;
Just some sanguine colors—
That’s the way it goes!

Yes I know what you are talking about. About how they make the water rise up and down so the boat could continue to sail on the other side. Here in Michigan we have that up north and when I saw it I could't grasp the idea at first I have a hard time figuring it out. It take long for hubby to explained it to me and for me thinking about it, lol!!
And just by looking at your photos and knowing the ground is below sea level that is something else. Thanks for the information and happy Wednesday!

Boat life would be interesting...and if the neighbors are too noisy at night you can move! :)

Visiting from "Midweek Blues". A couple of weeks ago I watched a "Househunters International" episode on tv where the couple was looking for a houseboat in Amsterdam. I never even THOUGHT about living on a boat until I saw that show...but now? Hmmmm....looks intriguing.

While I've not dreamed of living on a houseboat, I've always been in tntriqued with taking one of those long boat trips in the UK.

Now that I see these lovely photos, though, I may have to change some of my retirement dreams.

No yard to mow...just water to enjoy!

Thanks for a lovely link to the letter "B".

Fantastic reflections in that first shot. I would expect it would be rather damp living on a boat!

I too love the reflections in the first shot!
The clouds and bare branches reflecting is lovely.
We had a friend who lived on a boat for a little while but decided he didn't like it like he thought he would.

Thanks for commenting on my WW post. You asked about a float cabin. It isn't like a boat or a house boat or the barges in your picture. It is a regular cabin, however it is built on a deck over a large float made up of cedar logs. In British Columbia they have a long history as working structures for remote logging and fish camps. Powell Lake has about 200, but just for pleasure. You can find float homes ( fancy relative) in marinas in places such as Sausalito, Portland and Seattle. Remember the movie Sleepless in Seattle? Tom Hanks' character lived in a float home. - Margy

I love the upside down feeling of the boat floating in the sky and the patches of Maxfield Parrish-like clouds.

The next best thing to living on a boat is living by the water! That's how I live and would ever change! Love that first photo with the beautiful coloured reflections!

There are many float homes and boat homes in the bays and harbours on Vancouver Island. I think it would be a treat to live on one for a summer.

Oh what lovely photos, and I can only imagine living around that area is quite blissful....I blog with a lady who has lived on a boat for 20 years and they have come back to the ground once again...there are good and bad points to every place, for all of us don't you think...two things that stand out right now that she said were, one, oh now they can stretch...and she does love having a real good sized kitchen to cook in now.....!

Thanks for reminding me of the cute boat houses I've seen on those canals. Love this city.

Jeannette, these photos are so romantic, in my opinion. I know I will never be so fortunate to visit Holland, so I'm happy to be able to experience it's beauty through your eyes.

And whether your comment is 1, 6, or 68 -- I do my best to return the favor. I appreciate your thoughtfulness. :)

Teacher,
Yes, red makes it cheerful!

Wifetolifeline,
Thanks so much for your visit!

Laarni,
Of course, THAT life (since it's different) is better than mine, lol!

J.Bar,
Thanks for your visit and hope you r weekend is dryer than mine:)

Kim,
Glad I'm not the only one who has difficulty understanding these things:)

Jo,
Thanks so much and also for your visit!

Bestsy,
Yes, in Holland one doesn't often see pink clouds in the water!

Monika,
Thank you, Friend!

Rebecca,
Oh what a great idea!!

Kathy,
Maybe you're getting me sold on the idea too!

Jenny,
Mowing is not my favorite partime either. The only worry with a boat is....rust!

Naturefootstep,
I would not try it when living as far North as you do! And I've seen your beast in the meanwhile!!
