SUMMER NIGHT

These pics were taken while waiting for the fireworks on the water side on the 4th of July. Always a very special atmosphere when people pack themselves on the waterfront to have the best seats on the lawn, marking their territory with their blankets, chairs and stuff (we are not that different from dogs, are we?:) ). Lights of the boats start to flicker over the water. All is in anticipation of what is to come.

The last lights shimmering on the waves, bringing a nostalgic air. Parents holding their children close. A light night breeze begins to blow.

The ones who were posturing with impressive who-knows-what when it was still daylight, fade into the darkness. Faces disappear but voices remain. Unendless flashes of cell phones.
An overall calm sets in.

By the time darkness begins begins its reign, everyone has mellowed out and all are waiting with anticipation for the fire works to begin.

Great colors for a summer night. That sunset is as good as fireworks for me.

Gaelyn,
I agree -nothing is more beautiful than nature! Hope you are still enjoying your trip:)

That's the right atmosphere for fireworks and no rain!
Thanks for your comment. The Frisians are our Aboriginals; they were here before the Romans came in 70 AD. The Vikings came a thousand years later . They were here from 800 till 1000 AD. Then they settled in France and England, in Iceland and even for a short time in Greenland, but also in Russia. The Frisians still have their noormannenpoortjes in churches. They were low and opened to the north, so that any one leaving a church had to bow to the north, where the Vikings came from. Part of the prayers in church was: " Oh God,deliver us from the Norsemen!" Friesland was not interesting for the Romans . It was a country that was too wet, too cold and too poor.As far as I know the Frisians were there first.

Wil,
Very interesting and thank you for the explanation! As a child I was never interested in history, because of the dates (jaargetallen), and it is catching up with me now- since now I am interested in the origin of things.

O yes, rain would ruin the fireworks, and no one would stay! Californians are so used to dry weather, they don't know what to do with rain :)

We Dutch people are our own aboriginals as we have lived here since the stone age and really settled the place in the bronze age. I remember there being archeological digs right in my neighborhood where new houses were being built and the remains dated from the bronze age and were from old dwellings built with poles. The original Frisians were black haired and many immigrated to England and were subsequently replced by a Germanic blond haired tribe that we got to know as the Frisians that also live in West Friesland. There are still black haired, blue eyed Frisians today.

Fireworks at the waterfront must be marvellous. I do worry a little about the cats and dogs though.

Thank you Dawn,
guess you can provide us with beautiful summer night pics, since daylight stays soo long!

Since you are also interested in the origin of things at your blog, most of what I know about Scandinavia are the Vikings, because they were a warring people in the past. Were the Swedes part of that? If not, what role did they play in the ancient days of the tribes?

Jeannette StG said...

Didn't know you were interested in history Irene! I have several questions for you.

Is there a reason the dwellings they found in your area were on poles? (like in Amsterdam, it was because of the water...)

Do you know why many Frisians immigrated to England? I believe it since hubby's last name is also found in England, and I always wondered about that - but you solved that puzzle LOL

Eleanor - yes the fireworks were amazing! For animals with sensitive ears it must be horrid - have no clue why people took their dogs with them!
(maybe so they would be with their owner, at a time where you can hear the fire works all over the city?)

Antigoni,
Thank you! I'm sure hundreds keep coming back every year because of these special moments!
When do they have fire works in Greece?

Jeannette StG said...

Thank you Gary! I'll go for everything that is pretty!

What a wonderful setting - and the photos/post to describe it brought me there *smiling*

Jeannette StG said...

Thank you Kathryn! I keep wondering about your last name - do you know its origin?

Wonderful photos! We left Santa Cruz to spend the 4th in Turlock at my cousin's. Everyone in Santa Cruz told use we should stay for the fireworks. Great summer memories. We had the best barbeque in the Central Valley. Sometimes it's more important to be with family and friends.

My goodness Jeannette, what an atmosphere you created with your words and pictures. You can see the artistic streak in you for sure.

Neetzy,
So agree withyou -you have chosen the better - to be with family and friends!

Thank you Joan! Showering people with kindness is your gift:)

Wonderful photos - so atmospheric - I can imagine you all sitting waiting for the fireworks and celebrations to begin:)

Jeannette StG said...

Rosie, thank you - yes, it was a very special atmosphere! Americans are good in appreciation of casual events (camping equipment, food, blankets, little tents)

Jeanette, yes, the Vikings are part of our history. Historians and archaeologists keep changing their minds about them all the time though ;) Among other things to remember, the borders between countries/realms have changed many times since those days.

DawnTreader,
Never got to go to Scandanavia, but I always wanted to visit the fjords, and their thick forests.
Can't remember if I told you that I am a Dutchman living in Los Angeles, which is a very different city than the media portrays!!!
